AUGUST 30, 2008 - JUNIOR PIRATES NOTES
MARSHALL, IL - The Cumberland Junior Pirates played at Marshall on Saturday night, August 30, 2008. The 5th grade game was played first while we waited for the referees to show up. The Junior Pirates won that one 6-0 on a 25 yard touchdown run by Cameron James.
The 5th and 6th grade game was an all out war. Both teams played hard, especially their defensive squads. At the end of regulation, the score was knotted at 0-0. The boys continued to fight through two scoreless overtime periods before the Junior Pirates scored on a halfback pass from Caleb Brumleve to Dylan Sims to go up 6-0. The Jr. Pirates added 6 more on an interception return for touchdown by Brumleve. This game showed how tough the Jr. Pirates and the Lions can play and fans should expect to see both teams play again later this season during playoff time.
The 7th and 8th grade game proved to be another dogfight. Pads were popping all night as both teams did everything they could do to score. The Junior Pirates scored early on a 12 yard run by Zach Poe, but the point after failed. The Junior Pirates scored four plays later on a blocked punt by Holden Watters. The ball landed in the outstretched hands of Colton Ingram, who raced 30 yards into the end zone to score. The point after failed, but the Jr. Pirates were up 12-0. The Lions scored, making it 12-8. The rest of the game turned into a defensive struggle, and the Jr. Pirates took a knee to seal the final score at 12-8. It was an incredible evening of football!
The Jr. Pirates travel back to Tri-County to take on the Titans on Sunday, September 7, 2008. Game time is 1:00 p.m. Thanks to everyone who helps make this possible, especially our parents! Go Jr. Pirates!
AUGUST 24, 2008 - JUNIOR PIRATES NOTES
The Cumberland Junior Pirates took on the East Central Panthers on Sunday, August 24, 2008. It was a beautiful August afternoon and the home crowd was excited to see their 5th and 6th grade panthers beat Cumberland 19-0. The Junior Pirates had a lot of aggressiveness but couldn't seem to put the ball in the end zone. Danny Duniphan had many outstanding runs thanks to an offensive line that opened up holes for him all day. The players worked hard in their first afternoon game of the year but victory was denied.
The 5th grade game was a different story, as the Junior Pirates put 6 points on the board thanks to excellent blocking by our lineman and a beautiful run by Dreyton Ruholl. The Junior Pirates went on to win 6-0.
The 7th and 8th grade Junior Pirates watched the 5th and 6th grade game and vowed to avenge their loss. The players were ready to hit from the first play and at the end of the day, it was all Cumberland as the Junior Pirates fought to a 20-0 victory. The game was much closer than the scoreboard indicated, however. The offensive line, led by Austin Jamison, Jamin Repp, Tyler Godden, Alex Carter, and Colt Brummer, opened up the field for running backs Jonathon Duniphan, Colton Ingram, and Zach Poe. Tight ends Dylan Gentry and Trevor Brumleve blocked East Central as well. Cody Hornbeck called the signals for the Junior Pirates. The Junior Pirates were impressed with the strides that East Central's program has made and were impressed by the size of their opponents.
AUGUST 11, 2008 - JUNIOR PIRATES NOTES
Oakland, IL - The Cumberland Junior Pirates enjoyed picture perfect weather on Sunday August 10, 2008. The annual Wabash Valley Youth Football League Jamboree was held at Tri County Football Field in Oakland, Illinois. Parents and players formed a caravan from Greenup and headed north, where they experienced a great day of football.
The biggest hurdle of the day was the weigh-ins. In this league, players that catch or run the football have to be at or below a certain weight. Fortunately, our players were in good shape and we all made weight!
The rest of the day was spent between watching the teams on the field and rooting for our teams when they played. The 7th and 8th grade played Casey-Westfield first, and from the battle that occurred, these two teams could very well end up in the playoffs again later this fall. The Pirates played Palestine in their second game and looked just as sharp.
The 5th and 6th grade team played the hosts Tri-County and later battled with Palestine. This was a good experience for many of our younger players to learn what its like hitting another team after practicing on each other for the past 2 weeks!
